Woods Reservoir completed 70 years ago this month

The reservoir created by the construction of the Elk River Dam was dedicated in the memory of Col. Lebbeus Woods in 1953. Pictured at the dedication ceremony are Woods’ wife Dorothy and son. Woods was one of the first two Air Force officers to arrive at AEDC for the center project. He served at AEDC until February 1952, when he was given one of the top posts within the then-active Air Materiel Command. The Elk River Dam was completed 70 years ago this month. Its construction led to the creation of Woods Reservoir, which has since supplied cooling water to the test facilities at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee. Arnold AFB is the headquarters of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex. (U.S. Air Force photo)
