AEDC’s Taylor Swanson supports SBIR project on space asset threat containment technologies
Military and civilian satellites can be subjected to natural and manmade signal disruptions. A Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) project currently underway to simulate that disruption is taking place between Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC) at Peterson AFB, Colo., AEDC and Welkin Sciences, Inc., Colo. The goal is to develop a MILSATCOM Atmospheric Scintillation Simulator or MASS to test the efficiency of satellite’s capabilities to operate regardless of scintillation. Pictured is an artist’s rendering of the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) Space Vehicle-1, launched in August 2010. (Courtesy of the U.S. Air Force Space Command)

AEDC team supports testing of GE engine augmentor rig in J85 facility
Prior to a static performance test at the University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) Propulsion Research Facility, Brad Besheres, an outside machinist in the ATA Technology Branch’s instrumentation and diagnostics group, is inspecting AEDC’s upgraded J85 Augmentor rig coupled to GE’s developmental augmentor assembly, all of which is mounted on the facility’s T-6 thrust frame. The test has two phases, with the first to characterize and evaluate the augmentor’s durability and mission performance. The second phase focuses on instrumentation and diagnostics project activities. These focus on various measurement techniques (optical tail pipe camera stereoscopic imaging and gas sampling techniques) that can be applied to gas turbine engines. (Photo by Rick Goodfriend)
