This image shows a laser curtain that was installed on a 500-ton Cincinnati Press Brake due to a recommendation by a team member. Several AEDC craft workers were involved with the installation. The press brake is used to bend steel plates up to three-quarters of an inch thick and 14-feet long. The safety concern for the apparatus is that the press uses large flywheels and once it is triggered, it can’t be easily stopped. If a person comes into close proximity to the moving parts, they could be injured. (AEDC photo)

The rake hardware that will be used this summer in the Phase II Flow Calibration of the 40-by-80 foot test section at the AEDC National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex at the Ames Research Facility, California, was fabricated at the AEDC Model and Machine Shop. Fabrication of the flow characterization rake was kept “in house” due to tight tolerance requirements, the ability to have local oversight of the fabrication efforts, and to keep the flexibility to adjust design constraints on the fly, all the while maintaining schedule for a summer 2017 test entry. The rake is designed to support 27 probes distributed in an array so that flow quality measurements can be made across a representative cross section of the wind tunnel test section. The probes will measure flow static and dynamic pressure as well as flow angles and turbulence over the survey area. Additional sensors on the array will measure tunnel total temperature. The goal of the Phase II Flow Calibration is to characterize the 40-by-80 test section flow quality throughout the tunnel operational envelope and report the results. AEDC engineers test the Towed Airborne Plume Simulator (TAPS), a missile simulator that can be towed 500 to 1000 meters behind an aircraft to test early warning sensors on military aircraft and allow for either evasive or defensive action. The TAPS system is tested at the AEDC High Speed Fan Facility prior to a flight mission. There TAPS plume is controlled to mimic the behavior of a surface-to-air missile plume. In February, the AEDC TAPS team was named the recipient of the Outstanding Scientist Team Award, one of the AEDC Science, Engineering and Technical Management Awards presented for outstanding performance in management.
