A panel constructed to be representative of an aerospace vehicle fuselage in material type, weight, thickness and support sits on a table in the von Kármán Gas Dynamics Facility at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., May 2, 2023. The panel was subjected to hypersonic airflows to observe and measure the effects of the heating which occurs under those conditions. The dot pattern is specifically designed to enable cameras to measure deformation in the panel. Researchers were also able to visibly observe the deformation occurring, including a “snap-through” moment when a section went from concave to convex. (U.S. Air Force photo by Jill Pickett)

Decommissioned Mach 8 tunnel removed to make room for future test opportunities

The infrastructure seen here is all that remained of Tunnel E at the von Kármán Gas Dynamic Facility on Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., prior to the start of its demolition in early 2022. Absent are the critical Mach 8 nozzle and test section components, as well as the unique magnetic model support system. Marshall Brown, a former AEDC engineer, checks a model suspended in the Tunnel E wind tunnel at Arnold Air Force Base in January 1972. In Tunnel E, a magnetic model support system (MMSS) was used, which eliminated the need for strut or sting supports that generated unwanted disturbance in the wakes of the model.
