Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) engineer Dr. Stan Powell has won the 2009 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) ground test award .

The award was presented at an awards luncheon held in conjunction with the 45th AIAA, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, SAE, American Society for Engineering Education and Joint Propulsion Conference and Exhibit in Denver, Colo.

"I was abashed," he said. "For a little more than 30 years now I have been paid to learn neat things, and now, for the Ground Testing Technical Committee to say that some of those things I learned turned out to be useful is very rewarding."

The award is presented for outstanding achievement in the development or effective utilization of technology, procedures, facilities or modeling techniques for flight simulation, space simulation, propulsion testing or other ground testing associated with aeronautics and astronautics.

The award citation declares, "Dr. Powell's original research and ability to bring together the computational and experimental have served the ground test community for over 25 years. He is a unique asset in the ground test community."

Dr. Powell has served the ground test community at AEDC as one of the foremost experts in modeling and analysis of thermophysical sciences associated with high-speed phenomena. He has produced original modeling of combustion processes, original modeling of thermodynamic and transport processes of hypersonic test media and original analysis of combustion effects on test data, all of which are the basis for operation of AEDC's hypersonic and propulsion facilities.

Dr. Powell currently leads the computational and simulation effort to develop a "fly-the-mission" capability in the Aerodynamic and Propulsion Test Unit (APTU) facility. He is an AIAA Associate Fellow, past recipient of a 2006 AIAA Harry Staubs Precollege Outreach award and a 2004 AIAA Sustained Service award.
