Air Force 60th Anniversary events announced Published Sept. 19, 2007 By Raquel March AEDC/PA ARNOLD AIR FORCE BASE, Tenn. -- Officials for the base's Air Force 60th Anniversary celebration announced today the lineup of events that will occur Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Gossick Leadership Center recreation area beginning at noon. The free celebration begins at noon and is open to the public. The day's activities will include free carnival rides, a volleyball tournament, a build-a-boat competition, live music, swimming and conclude with fireworks. Vendors will be on-site with hamburgers, hotdogs, nachos, pizza and other foods. Also, popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy and funnel cakes will be available. Lifeguards will be posted for swimming. "The carnival rides and games will provide a wide variety of activity for the adults and youngsters," said Tom Fahrer, chief of Services. "Great food and fun will be the order for the day." Registration for the volleyball tournament begins at noon and the tournament starts at 2:00 p.m. The build-a-boat competition also has a noon registration time and a 3:00 p.m. sail time. Build-a-boat supplies, cardboard and duct tape, and instructions will be provided and competitors have three hours to construct their boats. Prizes will be awarded for both the volleyball tournament and the build-a-boat competition. Music will begin at noon with disc jockey, David Hartful. The band Utopia will perform from 4-8 p.m. Festivities will conclude at 8:15 p.m., with a 20-minute fireworks display that can be viewed from the beach. "The fireworks will be an excellent way to culminate a great day of activities for AEDC," Mr. Fahrer said. "We want to provide a great family event for the community while celebrating our Air Force heritage. Hopefully, people in the community will get a better idea of the mission at AEDC and how we contribute to the overall Air Force mission through research and development." This is a non-alcoholic event. Free public parking will be available. The celebration is sponsored by Arnold Air Force Base's 704th Services division.
