The crackle of rifle and machine gun fire has been heard from the base rifle ranges all week during the day and into the evening as members of the 101st Airborne division Rakkasans make use of Arnold AFB facilities for training.

Members of the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment commanded by Lt. Col. R.J. Lillibridge arrived last Sunday to set up training for several hundred soldiers who will rotate through the Arnold range complex through next Friday. The troops are being supported by members of the Tennessee Army National Guard Range staff.

Major William Zemp in charge of the two week training here has been very impressed with the support from the National Guard and the support for the military everywhere they have gone in Tullahoma and the local area. "People have walked up to us and thanked us for our service and that is awesome" he said.

The major pointed out that the weapons; tactics and training have changed since the last battalion of the 101st was at Arnold in June 2005. "The experience of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and the advanced optics and night vision equipment we have give us an advantage and we train as we deploy and fight as a unit" he said.

Every soldier was a professional and proud of the job they do and that included several soldiers with 3-4 combat deployments since 9/11.
