F-4C Phantom II display at Arnold AFB honors Wynne and Golberg

The static F-4C Phantom II on display outside Gate 2 at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., is dedicated to Col. Lawrence Golberg and Maj. Patrick Wynne. The F-4 on display is similar to the one Golberg and Wynne were flying when they were struck over North Vietnam and crashed in the jungle in 1966. Their remains were located and returned to the U.S a little more than a decade later. The display was dedicated in memory of Golberg and Wynne during a Nov. 27, 2007, ceremony. AEDC supports hypersonic structures experimentation

A panel constructed to be representative of an aerospace vehicle fuselage in material type, weight, thickness and support sits on a table in the von Kármán Gas Dynamics Facility at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., May 2, 2023. The panel was subjected to hypersonic airflows to observe and measure the effects of the heating which occurs under those conditions. The dot pattern is specifically designed to enable cameras to measure deformation in the panel. Researchers were also able to visibly observe the deformation occurring, including a “snap-through” moment when a section went from concave to convex. (U.S. Air Force photo by Jill Pickett)

AEDC Spark Tank: Imager enhances leak detection, electrical inspection capabilities

Wayne Horton, ultrasound lead at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn., right, looks on as Robert Hastings, an electrician at Arnold AFB, uses a recently-acquired acoustic imager to check equipment near the J-4 test facility at Arnold for leaks May 26, 2023. The imager can identify leaks in compressed air, gas and vacuum systems, and allows users to see the exact location of a leak on a digital image displayed on the device. It can also determine the distance, size and decibel level of a leak. The imager was one of seven projects that received funding through the 2023 AEDC Spark Tank program, which allows members of the AEDC workforce to propose suggestions for improving AEDC processes, products and test capabilities.
