Herb Wiker makes final adjustments to the high-speed motion picture cameras set up at the Bird Impact Range at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, in 1972. These cameras, operating at thousands of frames per second, captured the impacts of bird strikes simulated at the facility, more famously known as the “Chicken Gun.” Strikes were simulated by launching chicken carcasses at test articles, and the muzzle of the launcher can be seen beneath the steel structure on the left. Woods Reservoir opened for public fishing and recreation on May 30, 1953, and quickly became a destination for swimmers, skiers and fishermen. It was also used for AEDC picnics and other functions.
