AEDC Fellow Richard Austin’s contributions to the complex remembered

Richard Austin, left, then-director of Propulsion Test at Arnold Engineering Development Center, later known as Arnold Engineering Development Complex, is honored in 1993 as the “founding father” of the Master Data Exchange Agreement between the U.S. and Canada. Austin was honored by the National Research Council of Canada for an agreement he spearheaded which allowed propulsion testing and measurement techniques associated with all types of airbreathing engines to be exchanged between the two governments in an effort to enhance global communication and technical knowledge. Richard Austin, left, then-deputy director of Propulsion Test at Arnold Engineering Development Center, later known as Arnold Engineering Development Complex, is among AEDC personnel who gathered to examine data collected on Space Shuttle Challenger at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., in the early 1980s. AEDC was instrumental in identifying the source of hydrogen leaking from within the Challenger’s main motors. Changes coming for DOD civilian ID holders

Department of Defense civilian retiree ID cards will no longer be valid effective Aug. 31, 2023. The DOD issued a memorandum in February 2023 announcing the issuance of new civilian retiree ID cards would be terminated immediately and previously issued cards would remain valid through the end of August. DOD civilian retirees can take steps to continue to access Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn. The preferred method is to obtain a REAL ID, such as the one pictured at left in the above image, and register with the Arnold AFB Visitor Control Center.
