AEDC support aids F-15 in reaching 50-year milestone

The compatibility of the Pratt & Whitney F100 engine to the variable geometry inlet of the F-15 Eagle is evaluated in 1972 in the 16-foot supersonic wind tunnel at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex. Since the test section was not large enough to accommodate a full-sized nose section, a special fuselage segment designed to produce inlet airflow conditions the F-15 would encounter in flight was installed in the wind tunnel. The test hardware was cycled through a wide range of altitude and speed conditions. The Air Force recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the F-15’s deployment. A modified F-15 Eagle is flown in the late 1970s by NASA personnel at what was then known as the Dryden Flight Research Center in California to obtain aerodynamic measurements on an instrumented cone to compare with similar data taken with the same cone in nearly two dozen foreign and domestic wind tunnels. The program originated at Arnold Engineering Development Complex, headquartered at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, with the purpose of developing a mathematical means of eliminating noise effects from wind tunnel data to improve its correlation with flight data. Hundreds of instrumentation lines used to sense or measure various aspects, including temperature, pressure, fuel flow and vibration, are connected to an early version of the Pratt & Whitney F100 engine in the late 1960s to prepare it for a 1970 test in one of the high-altitude test cells at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex. NFAC team assesses flow quality in 40-foot by 80-foot test section

The test rig used to complete a recent flow characterization study at the National Full-Scale Aerodynamics Complex (NFAC) in Moffett Field, Calif., can be seen in the 40-foot by 80-foot test section of the facility. The rig is comprised of a multi-probe array that evenly distributes more than two dozen sensors through the primary area of interest in the tunnel cross section. During the multi-phased effort, updates were made to the existing flow calibration and characterization in the tunnel. The rig was designed and built by personnel at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex.
