Getting a closer look

James “J.D.” Walls, a quality engineer with Lockheed Martin, inspects a Thermal Protection System (TPS) foam tile after approximately 30 seconds of testing in Tunnel C. The process of testing the foam tile samples was repeated 265 times at rates as high as 14 tiles-per-hour. The TPS foam protects the propellent inside the space shuttle's external fuel tank during ascent. (Photo by David Housch)
