Up and running
A General Electric F101 engine, the power plant for the B-1B Lancer Bomber, underwent testing in Arnold Engineering Development Center’s aero-propulsion J-1 test cell at intermediate and maximum thrust power conditions. The recent successful altitude testing of the engine was the first augmentor performance and operability checks done to meet mission requirements over a full envelope of altitude and Mach numbers. An augmentor, otherwise know as an afterburner, increases basic engine thrust by spraying and burning additional fuel in the engine exhaust before accelerating it through the tailpipe.
