Drill away
Aerospace Testing Alliance (ATA) Machinist Mickey Cowan, with AEDC’s Model Shop, drills holes in the model of the Ares I first stage booster during the test article’s fabrication phase prior to heat transfer testing. The wires, which are approximately 1/100 of an inch in diameter, are routed from heat transfer gauges on the model through the holes and out 50 feet to the tunnel instrumentation system where the electrical signal (data) is amplified and digitized for collection and analysis.(Photo by Rick Goodfriend)
