Pilot mentoring program propels the future of hypersonics and young engineers

An extensive outage for maintenance occurs at Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel 9 once every five to ten years. After a complete tear down and refurbishment, the facility’s operation and maintenance staff rig one of nine high-pressure control valves in order to lift it into place. These three driver large vessels can be pressurized to 40,000 pounds per square inch and are one of the enabling technologies that make Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel 9 unique. Air Force HiFEX vehicle geometry readying for test in the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel 9. Novel airframe/engine integration combine with advanced test and evaluation techniques in a world-unique test environment to gain the very first data sets for this international US-German cooperative program as scientists and engineers look to the future of space access.

LASER-ILLUMINTAED PHOTOGRAPHY was developed at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex to study ablative effects on a 12,000 mph free-flight projectile in the Center’s 1,000-foot hypervelocity ballistic range. The technique provided a photographic exposure equivalent to 20 billionths of a second. (1970 AEDC Photo)
AEROBALLISTIC LAUNCH PREPARATION-Final step is the insertion of powder charge into breech launcher. In sequence, powder compresses hydrogen, hydrogen drives piston, piston compresses hydrogen in pump tube which accelerates model to desired velocity. The free-flight models will be fired through the 1,000-foot range at velocities up to and exceeding Mach 20. The test unit, 1,000-ft Hypervelocity Range-G, is part of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility at AEDC. (1963 AEDC Photo)
