Twenty-seven local students construct rockets in preparation for the Reach for the Stars rocket launch competition at the University of Tennessee Space Institute Sept. 19. Reach for the Stars, a national competition, was created by the Christa McAuliffe Challenger Learning Center in Sarasota, Fla. The AEDC Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Center, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and UTSI hosted the competition using solid-fuel powered rockets which were launched by each participating student. Those attending the AEDC STEM Center Open House had the chance to learn about the different equipment used as part of STEM’s robotics programs, which help students to develop analytical and problem solving skills. Local competitions are also held each year giving the students the chance to put their programming knowledge to the test. Three Tennessee Technological University (TTU) student teams presented their AEDC Collaborative Applied and Innovative Research Capstone Projects at AEDC on April 27. The three projects included development of a digital inclinometer replacement prototype, an instrumentation scanner emulator and a digital pulse counter prototype. All three projects are applied research in innovative implementations needed at AEDC with a goal of procurement and operations and maintenance (O&M) cost reductions, as well as increased flexibility and performance. Aerospace Testing Alliance (ATA) donated $1,100 recently to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Shelbyville. The money will be used to construct motor process control trainers for the class. According to Industrial Electricity Instructor Shannon Long, the trainers will help in teaching the students motor controls, process controls and troubleshooting skills. “This will also help me bring in more up to date products to give my students an edge,” Long said. “It is our goal to become the leading industry provider for future electricians.” From left: Industrial Electricity Night Instructor Houston Prater; ATA Employee and Community Activities Committee member Brandi Harmon; Industrial Electricity Instructor Shannon Long; ATA Test Support Branch Manager Walt Bishop and ATA Public Affairs Manager Kathy Gattis.
Aerospace Testing Alliance (ATA) donated $2,000 recently to the Air Force Junior ROTC program at Franklin County High School (FCHS). The company’s Mission Support Director, Pat Eagan, talked with the students about the importance of military service and the AEDC mission. The instructor, Everett Smith, said the money will be used to buy the required shirts and socks for the current group plus 30 incoming freshmen. The Aerospace Testing Alliance (ATA) Employee and Community Activities Committee (E&CAC) recently made a donation of $1,225 to student learning programs at Huntland School. As part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program for the school’s hands-on model building activities, funds will be used to purchase materials for designing and building model bridges. A portion will also go to the school’s math departments and the kindergarten’s “Brag Tag” program for rewarding positive behavior. The Huntland School Pre-K department recently received a $100 donation from the Aerospace Testing Alliance (ATA) Employee and Community Activities Committee (E&CAC) for the Hatch iStartSmart App. With iStartSmart, students can engage in activities that develop readiness skills, teachers can access individual progress reports and parents can view progress in 18 skills areas.
