Local youth participate in the America’s Kids Run, in which ages 5-13 ran a 1-mile course at their own pace. The America’s Kids Run is part of Armed Forces Day activities worldwide at all branches of military bases giving children a noncompetitive outlet to express their love for the sport. In addition to the America’s Kids Run, a 5K and 10K were held, open to people of all ages, and 10 award medals were presented by Col. Rodney Todaro, AEDC Commander, and Ron Stephenson, Services Fitness Center Manager. All runners also received a moisture wicking event t-shirt and a drawstring backpack with various promotional items for participating. (Photos provided)

Out of all the students that competed in the local Reach for the Stars competition at the University of Tennessee Space Institute May 13, this year’s winner was Jackson Parrish, age 11 of Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Tullahoma. The winner is determined by who lands their rocket closest to the target, which is marked 30 feet downrange from the launch pad. (Photo provided)

Col. Raymond Briggs, chief of the Arnold Air Force Base Test Systems Sustainment branch, makes remarks at the May 18 acceptance and naming ceremony for the new crane, a Grove GMK5200-1 Hydraulic All Terrain Mobile Crane, purchased to perform routine maintenance of the test facilities at Arnold. The crane was named Windy (pronounced wīn-dē), after retired crane supervisor Windy Cunningham. Briggs mentioned after holding a naming contest for two weeks and receiving 110 entries, a committee determined that Windy was the best fit in honor of Cunningham, who trained several crane operators during his time at Arnold. The Grove GMK5200-1 Hydraulic All Terrain Mobile Crane, pictured, was recently purchased for routine maintenance and repair of Arnold Air Force Base test support assets. The crane is 54 feet long, 10 feet wide or 26 feet wide with outriggers extended, 13 feet high and weighs 132,000 pounds. It is also capable of lifting 240 tons and has a reach of 210 feet. This metal witness plate was struck by a hypervelocity projectile during a recent checkout of the AEDC Range S-1. S-1 is currently undergoing checkout operations in preparation for three upcoming test projects. Several successful test launches, like the one above, have recently been performed in S-1. This is the high pressure section of the AEDC Range S-1 that launches hypervelocity projectiles. It is capable of withstanding forces of up to 400,000 pounds per square inch.
