Test cell that helped put man on moon completed 60 years ago

The rocket motor for the Apollo Service Module is installed for testing in J-3 at Arnold Air Force Base in 1966. The motor was repeatedly test fired in near space conditions to help NASA qualify the system as man-rated for the flight to the moon. This year marks the 60th anniversary of completion of the construction on J-3 and the initiation of the first operational test in the cell. (U.S. Air Force photo)
