What is happening to our trees?

Signs of flagging are present in these mature oak trees at Arnold Air Force Base, Tenn. Flagging refers to brown, dead tips of tree branches visible in late spring and early summer caused by the process of cicadas creating grooves on the underside of hardwood tree branches in which to lay eggs. This causes the branches to die, but it does not kill the tree as new tree growth will start at each flag. (U.S. Air Force photo by Jeffrey Page)
