AEDC at 75: Groundwork begins
Crews drill rock on the north side of the Elk River Dam core trench in February 1951 during construction of the dam. Work to dam the Elk River began in early 1950. This project was completed in September 1952. The construction of the Elk River Dam created Woods Reservoir, which has since supplied cooling water to the test facilities at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee. Arnold AFB is the headquarters of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex. (U.S. Air Force photo)
