AEDC at 75: Schriever champions Air Force research and development

Gen. Bernard Schriever, commander of the Air Force Systems Command, second from left, speaks with other attendees of a 1963 dinner at Arnold Engineering Development Center during which the planned University of Tennessee Space Institute was discussed. Known as the “Father of Air Force space and missiles,” Schriever led the nation’s Intercontinental Ballistic Missile program. Schriever was a regular visitor to Arnold Engineering Development Center during its early years and relied on AEDC for aerodynamic and rocket propulsion data. Schriever also supported Air Force research and development. Pictured with Schriever, from left, are then-University of Tennessee President Andrew Holt, then-AEDC Commander Maj. Gen. William Rogers and Tennessee Lt. Gov. James Bomar. (U.S. Air Force photo)
