During his farewell luncheon held June 20, Dr. Doug Blake’s colleagues had the opportunity to share stories about their time working with him. Pictured is Blake holding up a sign with a character called “Captain Fantastic” he received from Clark Brandon. Brandon said he had the idea for this character because Blake could sometimes be seen doodling pictures and flowcharts during meetings. Dr. Mica Endsley (left), the U.S. Air Force Chief Scientist, visited Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) during the 63rd anniversary of the Complex. She toured one-of-a-kind aerospace testing facilities and spoke with Wayne Hawkins, the AEDC Propulsion Wind Tunnel Test Branch Technical Director, about the hypersonic wind tunnel test capabilities of the von Kármán Gas Dynamics Test Facility (VKF). She also toured the AEDC Aerodynamic and Propulsion Test Unit for testing high speed propulsion systems and materials and the Propulsion Wind Tunnel 16-foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel, an aerodynamic testing facility. Since Michael Mills’ arrival at AEDC in 1978, he has devoted his knowledge to improving the operation of AEDC wind tunnels by resolving facility operational issues and maintaining wind tunnel flow quality. Mills has enhanced the AEDC wind tunnel operating envelopes, contributed to the requirements definition for new wind tunnels at AEDC and other government test facilities and supported more than 20 flow quality surveys and calibrations.
