AEDC stars in the spotlight

Josh Osborne (third from left), an Aeropropulsion Analyst with the Analysis & Evaluation Branch at Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) is shown atop the J-6 Large Rocket Test Cell Dehumidification Chamber on Oct. 18 in an interview for an Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Acquisition) contracted video. Fourteen other AEDC professionals were also interviewed Oct. 17-18 at the Arc Heaters, the 7-foot Vacuum Space Chamber and J-6. The AEDC professionals spoke about the mission, work environment, work/life balance and opportunities. Crew members for the NASA Human Exploration Research Analog simulation mission stand in front of the habitat for program. HERA is a high-fidelity mission simulation environment operated by NASA’s Human Research Program at the Johnson Space Center, Texas. HERA missions provide the operational setting for important HRP research aimed at reducing the risks to astronauts on future space exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit. The compatibility of the Pratt & Whitney F100 engine to the variable geometry inlet of the F-15 Eagle is evaluated in 1972 in the 16-foot supersonic wind tunnel at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex. Since the test section was not large enough to accommodate a full-sized nose section, a special fuselage segment designed to produce inlet airflow conditions the F-15 would encounter in flight was installed in the wind tunnel. The test hardware was cycled through a wide range of altitude and speed conditions. The Air Force recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the F-15’s deployment. A modified F-15 Eagle is flown in the late 1970s by NASA personnel at what was then known as the Dryden Flight Research Center in California to obtain aerodynamic measurements on an instrumented cone to compare with similar data taken with the same cone in nearly two dozen foreign and domestic wind tunnels. The program originated at Arnold Engineering Development Complex, headquartered at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, with the purpose of developing a mathematical means of eliminating noise effects from wind tunnel data to improve its correlation with flight data.
