Ask an astronaut
Dr. Kevin Ford, NASA space shuttle astronaut, answers questions posed by Lt. Col. Vanessa Bond, commander of Arnold Engineering Development Center's (AEDC) 716th Test Squadron, who knew him when she was a student at the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School. From left, Capt. Jeff Hartberger, 649th Test Systems Squadron, Jeff Staines, AEDC's space and missiles test facility planning lead, Trey Zarecor, a sophomore at Auburn University, Ala., and Capt. Chuck McNiel, an aeropropulsion test technology lead at AEDC, wait for a chance to meet Dr. Ford. Besides emphasizing the need to continually advance one's formal education, Dr. Ford also said NASA would more seriously consider those candidates for the astronaut corps who have gained some operational experience and expertise, whether as a pilot or in some other technically-oriented capacity. He said those chosen for the astronaut corps among his group included one person who had served aboard Navy submarines, an oceanographer, a medical doctor and physicists. (Photo by Philip Lorenz III)
