AEDC support aids F-15 in reaching 50-year milestone

A modified F-15 Eagle is flown in the late 1970s by NASA personnel at what was then known as the Dryden Flight Research Center in California to obtain aerodynamic measurements on an instrumented cone to compare with similar data taken with the same cone in nearly two dozen foreign and domestic wind tunnels. The program originated at Arnold Engineering Development Complex, headquartered at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, with the purpose of developing a mathematical means of eliminating noise effects from wind tunnel data to improve its correlation with flight data. The Air Force recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the F-15’s deployment. Models of the aircraft, engines and other F-15 components have frequently been tested by AEDC over the past 50 years. Hundreds of instrumentation lines used to sense or measure various aspects, including temperature, pressure, fuel flow and vibration, are connected to an early version of the Pratt & Whitney F100 engine in the late 1960s to prepare it for a 1970 test in one of the high-altitude test cells at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee, headquarters of Arnold Engineering Development Complex.
